Villa Matilde

The history of Villa Matilde Avallone began in the 1960s with Francesco Paolo Avallone, a lawyer and lover of historic wines. Fascinated by the accounts of Pliny and the verses of Virgil, Martial, and Horace, he decided to revive Falerno, the most famous wine of ancient Rome, which had been lost for centuries. Together with a group of scientists, including lecturers from the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Naples, he launched a long-term research project studying historical texts, terroir, and grape varieties. After years of study, several vines were identified that had survived the phylloxera outbreak of the late 19th century and could be traced back to the original Falerno varieties. These vines were replanted in the Massico area, exactly where they had once flourished, marking the beginning of a long-term project. At his side was Matilde, a quiet but essential presence, who became the constant point of reference and inspiration for the project, and after whom the company is named. In 1985, the second generation, Maria Ida and Salvatore Avallone, took over and continued to develop Francesco’s vision with dedication. Alongside the heart of the vineyard, Tenuta Villa Matilde Avallone, and the high-altitude vineyards, Tenuta Pietrafusa in Irpinia, there is now also the inland vineyard in Sannio, at Tenuta Roccaleoni, where the vines reflect the most authentic character of inland Campania. Here, Falanghina and Aglianico ripen slowly, resulting in wines that are intense and structured. Today, the third generation continues this path with Maria Cristina, an oenologist who translates the family values into style and precision, and Francesco Paolo, who is responsible for sales.
